Colour first

Retail demand clusters around rich, evenly distributed blue. Look for:

• Hue that reads blue, not overly violet or grey
• Saturation that holds under both daylight and warm indoor light
• Even colour face-up; avoid strong zoning that shows as patches in the finished jewellery

Ask the supplier for photographs and short video under consistent lighting so you can compare lots side by side.

Clarity and brilliance

Most natural sapphires show some inclusions. What matters for retail is whether inclusions affect durability or face-up beauty:

• Silk or fine needles can soften brilliance without harming wearability
• Large fractures, cavities, or heavy clouding reduce saleability
• Check how light returns from the table and crown facets

Cut and size range

Retailers need stones that set cleanly. Confirm:

• Proportionate outline (oval, cushion, round, or fancy as required)
• Windowing or extinction that dulls the centre
• Calibrated sizes if you produce standard mounts
• Approximate carat range and piece count in the lot

Origin and treatment

Ask clearly whether stones are heated, unheated, or otherwise treated, and what documentation accompanies the lot. Origin claims (for example Ceylon or other sources) should match what you will state to your own customers.
